Solar Water Heating Cylinders

Solar water cylinders are available in many different forms, there are vented and unvented solar cylinders, there is also direct and indirect cylinders. So what are the differences and which cylinder is the best for your application.

Vented or unvented cylinder?

A vented cylinder is usually made from copper and relies on the water being delivered by gravity, an expansion and feed tank (sometimes mistaken as a header tank) is situated in the loft area and the water is pushed down. This type of water delivery system is not good for direct showers and usually requires an additional pump for the hot water.

An unvented cylinder uses mains preasure to push the water through the circuit and depending on your incomming water preasure and flow rate is more beneficial for use with showers, the hot water will usually come from the taps at the same rate as your cold water.

Direct or indirect cylinder ?

We only offer indirect cylinders, indirect basically means there is 1 or 2 coils in the cylinder where a heat transfer liquid is passed through to heat the main content of the solar water cylinder.

Direct cylinders would pass the stored water through the heater (solar panel / Boiler) and return it heated into the cylinder.
